Who We Help
We help U.S. car buyers comparing new or used vehicles, drivers considering a switch to an EV, and owners planning their next five years of driving. Your mileage, local energy rates, access to home charging, and ownership period shape the comparison.
What We Calculate
We compare purchase price, charging and gasoline costs, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation. Our tools also explore EV-versus-hybrid break-even mileage, resale value, and battery health and replacement risk. Battery risk estimates provide context; they are not a diagnosis or a guaranteed repair bill.
Our Cost Model
GearUp combines published data with stated assumptions and your inputs to build original cost tables and calculator results. A typical five-year comparison adds purchase price, energy, maintenance, and insurance, then subtracts estimated resale value. Each tool explains the costs it includes and excludes; an energy-only comparison is not a total ownership cost estimate.
We show the assumptions, formulas, sources, and limits behind the numbers so you can check the calculation and see how a different rate, mileage, or resale value changes the result.
Our Data Sources
We use EPA efficiency ratings, EIA electricity-price data, AAA fuel-price and ownership-cost data, NHTSA recall and safety information, and manufacturer specifications and warranty documents. Depreciation and maintenance assumptions draw on the sources identified in our methodology, including iSeeCars, Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, and Consumer Reports. Source dates and estimates are identified where they are used.
