Published 2026 estimates for a full out-of-warranty pack replacement in the United States cluster between roughly $4,000 and $25,000 installed. The spread itself is the useful information: it tells you the bill is set by the specific vehicle, not by an industry average.

No two of those ranges agree, and none of them is wrong. They are counting different vehicles, different pack sizes, and different mixes of new, remanufactured, and repaired packs. Treat any single published number as a rough scale check, not as a quote.
Why you cannot multiply pack size by the industry price per kWh
Industry pack prices are frequently quoted in EV coverage: BloombergNEF put the average lithium-ion pack price at about $108 per kWh in 2025, with battery-electric packs below $100 per kWh for a second consecutive year. Manufacturing-side estimates land near $110 to $130 per kWh, which puts a 75 kWh pack around $8,000 to $10,000 in parts before overhead.

Real-world quotes for comparable vehicles run $10,000 to $25,000+. The gap is retail markup, freight and handling for a pack that can weigh several hundred pounds, diagnostics, software calibration, and the high-voltage labor hours above. That gap - not the cell price - is what you are actually negotiating.
How likely is a replacement in the first place?
A large repair bill and an expected ownership cost are different quantities. Recurrent's tracked fleet of more than 20,000 EVs shows an overall battery replacement rate of about 2.5%, concentrated in the earliest generation of vehicles now roughly 14 years old. The U.S. Department of Energy has similarly reported that replacements due to failure were rare across plug-in vehicles from model years 2011 through 2023, excluding recalls.

Why there is no single EV battery replacement price
Battery-pack cost varies widely by vehicle. The pack size, chemistry, parts availability, labor, diagnostic work, cooling system, and whether a repair can target a module rather than the full pack all affect the quote. A search-result average cannot tell you what a specific vehicle will cost to repair.
Before using a replacement figure in a buying decision, get a model-specific quote from an authorized service department or qualified EV repair specialist. Ask whether the quote assumes a new, remanufactured, repaired, or salvaged pack, what labor is included, and what warranty applies to the repair.
Battery failure risk is not the same as normal degradation
All traction batteries lose some capacity with age and use. That is different from a failure that requires a repair or replacement. The U.S. Department of Energy has reported that battery replacements due to failure were rare in the cited study of plug-in vehicles from model years 2011 through 2023, excluding recalls. That finding is useful context, not a guarantee for an individual car.
Range loss, charging behavior, temperature exposure, damage, and diagnostic trouble codes need model-specific interpretation. Do not decide from the dashboard range estimate alone.
