How Much Does an EV Add to Your Electric Bill? $53 a Month

Quick Answer
A typical U.S. driver charging at home adds about $53 a month to their electricity bill — roughly 33% on top of a $159 average bill, or about 5.3 cents per mile driven.
But that national figure hides a spread wide enough to change the decision. In the Mountain states the same car adds about 29% to the bill. In New England it adds about 59%. Same vehicle, same driving, more than double the impact.
And EV owners themselves report paying more than the arithmetic predicts: $63 a month nationally, not $53. The reason matters, and it is not what most articles say.
The arithmetic, shown
Three numbers produce the answer. Miles driven, efficiency, and your utility rate.
The average American drives roughly 1,000 miles a month. A mainstream EV returns about 3.5 miles per kWh in mixed driving. That works out to 285.7 kWh a month at the wall. The U.S. average residential electricity price was 18.44 cents per kWh in the most recent EIA reading.
285.7 kWh × $0.1844 = $52.69 a month. About $632 a year.
For context on what that lands on top of: the average U.S. household buys 863 kWh a month, which at the same rate is a bill of about $159. So the EV is not a rounding error on the bill, and it is not a doubling either. It is roughly a third more.
Three drivers, three answers
The $53 figure is one point on a curve. Move mileage and efficiency to the ends of the realistic range and the answer moves a long way:

GearUp calculation using the U.S. average residential rate of 18.44 cents/kWh and the EIA U.S. average household consumption of 863 kWh per month. Efficiency figures reflect the mainstream range for compact and midsize EVs; a large electric SUV or pickup will fall below 3.0.
The heavy-usage row is the one worth pausing on. A 1,400-mile-a-month driver in an inefficient EV pays $86 a month — more than half again what the household was already paying for everything else combined. That driver almost certainly still saves money against gasoline, but the savings show up on a bill they no longer receive, while the cost shows up on one they do.
Where you live matters more than what you drive
The mileage range above spans about $52 a month. The geographic range spans more.
J.D. Power's 2026 EVX Home Charging Study asked 5,399 EV owners what they actually spent on home charging over the previous 30 days. Nationally the answer was $63, up $5 year over year. By region it split hard:

Bill figures are EIA annual data for 2024, the most recent year published at census-division level. Charging figures are self-reported and were collected between November 2025 and February 2026. Because residential rates have risen since 2024, the percentages above are an upper bound; the direction and the size of the regional gap are the durable findings, not the decimal.
A New England household starts from a bill that is already 36% above the Mountain states, then adds an EV charge that is nearly three times larger in dollar terms. The two effects compound. That is why "EVs cost about $60 a month to charge" is close to useless as planning advice: the number a New Englander should plan around is nearly triple the number someone in Utah should.
Satisfaction data tracks it exactly. Mountain owners rated charging cost 771 on J.D. Power's scale; New England owners rated it 552. That is not a difference in expectations. It is a difference in the bill.
Why owners report more than the math predicts
Run the same 285.7 kWh against each region's own electricity rate and you get $47 nationally, $79 in New England, and $40 in the Mountain states. Owners reported $63, $99, and $36.
Two of the three land above the calculation. One lands below it. Anyone telling you they know exactly why is guessing, and here is the honest reason: at least three separate factors each close a gap of that size on their own.
- Efficiency below 3.5 mi/kWh. Dropping to 3.0 adds about $9 a month by itself.
- Public charging in the mix. Shifting 15% of charging to public DC fast charging adds roughly $10.
- Higher mileage. 1,200 miles a month instead of 1,000 adds about $11.
Any one of them accounts for the entire national gap. You cannot back out which one is operating from a survey average, and neither can anyone else.
There is one more factor specific to this dataset, and it is the reason we would not treat $63 as an annual figure. The study was fielded entirely between November and February. Every respondent was reporting a winter month. Cold weather cuts EV efficiency through battery preconditioning, cabin heat, and reduced regeneration, so the same 1,000 miles draws more kilowatt-hours in January than in June. A summer-fielded version of this study would almost certainly return a lower number.
One warning if you go reading further on this. Several outlets are currently quoting a comparison between owners who schedule off-peak charging and owners who do not, at $65 versus $71. In the original release that comparison applies only within the subgroup of owners who attempt off-peak charging at all. Strip the condition off and both figures sit above the $63 national average, which is arithmetically impossible. Check the qualifier before you repeat the number.
What to do with this
Three things move your number, in descending order of leverage.
Find out what you actually pay per kWh. Not the state average — the number on your own bill, including delivery charges and riders. A Massachusetts household paying 32 cents will see roughly $91 a month for the same driving that costs a Utah household $35. Everything else is a rounding error next to this.

Know your public-versus-home split. Public charging averaged 42 cents per kWh nationally in AAA's August 2026 reading — more than double the residential rate. A driver who thinks they charge at home 90% of the time but actually manages 70% will be off by more than any efficiency assumption. One last framing point. The number that matters is not what the EV adds to your electricity bill. It is what the EV adds to your electricity bill minus what you stop spending at the pump. At the AAA national average of $4.09 a gallon and 30 mpg, 1,000 miles of gasoline runs about $136. Against $53 of home charging, the typical driver is roughly $83 a month ahead — while watching their electric bill climb by a third. Both things are true at once, and only one of them arrives as a statement in the mail.
