How to Check a Used EV's Battery Health Yourself
Why This Guide Exists
When you're evaluating a used EV, the dashboard's "100% charged" reading only tells you how full the battery is right now — that's state of charge, not state of health. The One Thing You Need to Know First
Not every OBD2 scanner works on an EV, and this trips up a lot of shoppers. Standard automotive scanners were built around the emissions systems on gasoline cars. BlueDriver, one of the most popular consumer scanners, states directly that fully electric vehicles do not support the OBDII diagnostics system the device requires, and that this applies to every fully electric vehicle currently on the market. If you already own a general-purpose scanner like a BlueDriver, it will not read EV battery data. Plug it into a Tesla, Leaf, or Ioniq 5 and you'll get little or nothing useful.
What actually works is a plain Bluetooth OBD2 dongle paired with an app built specifically for your EV's brand. The dongle just relays raw data; the app does the interpreting.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough
- Buy a plain Bluetooth OBD2 dongle — not a "smart" all-in-one scanner with its own bundled app. Confirm it lists Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Bluetooth 4.0+ support.
- Install the app that matches the target vehicle's brand (see the table above), not the dongle manufacturer's own app.
- With the car on or in accessory mode, plug the dongle into the OBD2 port — usually under the dashboard, near the steering column.
- Pair the dongle from inside the app, not your phone's general Bluetooth settings menu.
- Navigate to the battery or "State of Health" screen. On most non-Tesla EVs in Car Scanner, this shows as a percentage labeled SOH or Battery Health.
- Record the SOH percentage alongside the odometer reading — that combination is your real data point.
What a Healthy Number Looks Like

If your own scanner reading comes back noticeably below what the calculator estimates for similar age and mileage, treat that as a signal to get a professional inspection before you buy — not an automatic reason to walk away, since individual packs vary more than any fleet average can capture.
Where This Method Falls Short
